Camping is an integral part of the Woodcraft experience and a fantastic way for young people to make friends, build their independence and make some incredible memories. It builds bonds between us and inspires collaboration whilst creating a temporary community, helping to promote a cooperative and sharing approach.
At Hackney Woodcraft we try and camp as often as we can during the year. We generally run two main full district camps which everyone can attend, one in May for three or four nights and a week-long camp at the beginning of the summer holidays.
We tend to run a weekend residential camp for each age group (Elfins, Pioneers and Venturers) each year, often at a Woodcraft owned centre like Cudham or Darsham. In addition, individual groups are encouraged to run camps at other times, or to join nationally run camps.
A typical year might look like this:
February - Pioneer Weekend Residential Camp, usually indoors at Cudham
February - Venturer National Weekend at Lockerbrook (indoors)
March - Venturer Weekend Residential Camp (indoors)
April / May - individual groups weekends away
May Half Term - District Camp - four nights, sleeping in tents
Summer Holidays - District Camp - full week, sleeping in tents
Sept/October - individual group camps - often in tents, at a local woodland site.
October - Venturer and Pioneers Wild Camps - build your own shelter and cook your food on a fire.
November - Elfin Weekend Residential Camp, usually indoors at Cudham
