Welcome to Hackney Woodcraft Folk

Woodcraft Folk is a movement for children and young people, open to everyone from birth to adult. Woodcraft Folk offers a place where children will grow in confidence, learn about the world and start to understand how to value our planet and each other.

We have groups throughout the borough for young people aged between 6 and 21. You can find out more about each age group here.

Stoke Newington

In N16 we have groups for Elfins (6-9 year olds) and Pioneers (10-12 year olds). The groups meet at Grasmere School on Albion Road; at Jubilee School; in Clissold Park and at other venues around Stoke Newington.

Haggerston

In south Hackney we have groups for Elfins (6-9 year olds) and Pioneers (10-12 year olds). The groups meet at Sebright School, Goldsmiths Row E2 and at other venues around the local area.

Clapton

In Clapton we have groups for Elfins (6-9 year olds) and Pioneers (10-12 year olds). The groups meet at Clapton Park Methodist Church Hall on Chatsworth Road, E5; in Millfields Park and at other local venues.

Venturers (13-15 year olds)

We have a large and thriving Venturer group based at Charterhouse Road Club on Amhurst Road, central Hackney. We run group night sessions at locations around the borough and further afield.

District Fellows (16–20 years old)

District Fellows (DFs) are an autonomous organisation within Woodcraft and are completely self led. They help out with younger groups and also run their own camps and social events, both locally and nationally. Hackney's DF group is just reforming and currently meets on an ad-hoc basis.

All groups (apart from DFs) meet on Thursdays (term time only), usually between 6 and 7pm, although there is some variation between groups. Hackney Woodcraft Folk is a parent-led co-operative and we encourage parents to get involved in leading and supporting activities. Typically, a parent/carer might run one session and assist with two or three others in a term.

At the start of each term, we hold a planning session for children and parents/carers to suggest activities and themes for the term. We aim for a mix of social and environmental education; creative sessions such as craft or cooking; and outdoor activities. We also run several camps a year.

Our aim is to have great fun, but also to try and develop the young people's self-confidence and build their awareness of society and the world around them. Through our activities, outings and camps we help our members understand important issues like the environment, inequality, social justice, global conflict and sustainable development.

By encouraging children to think, we hope they will help build a peaceful, fairer world.

Hackney Woodcraft Folk currently receives no regular external funding. Most of our costs have to be covered by donations (subs) from members, so we suggest a donation of £25 per young person per term (or £6.25/month) or a reduced donation of £20 for siblings or those on limited income. You may choose to donate less than this (or more) if you wish.
