Thank you for volunteering with Hackney Woodcraft.
Our priority is the safety of children and young people. As a Volunteer you must do the following:
Read and be familiar with adult code of behaviour and Local Safeguarding Plan summary
Attend in person Woodcraft safeguarding training or if not possible…
Watch the Woodcraft “Intro to Safeguarding” webinar AND complete the NYA “Basic Introduction to Safeguarding for Volunteer Youth Workers”
Please read the guidance below and discus with your group's Safeguarding Lead how we can ensure your Safeguarding training is up-to-date.
As a starting point, all adults who attend group nights should read and be familiar with the Adult Code of Behaviour -
https://woodcraft.org.uk/resources/code-of-behaviour/
This behaviour code outlines the conduct Woodcraft Folk expects from all its volunteers and staff. Adhering to the code will:
help protect children and young people from abuse
avoid misunderstandings between volunteers
support effective dispute resolution
reduce the risk of unfounded allegations being made
Woodcraft Folk’s Safeguarding Policy must be followed by everyone, and across all the organisation’s activities, to make sure all children and young people who are part of our activities are kept safe, and enjoy the best outcomes.
This page on the National web site gives an overview of our approach to keeping children and young people safe at Woodcraft Folk, as well as a link to download the full policy.

This document outlines the agreed practices HWF use in order to follow the Safeguarding Policy.
HWF Local Safeguarding Plan 2024
See the HWF Membership / Training Matrix for more info on training requirements for different roles.
All Woodcraft Folk volunteers should complete regular safeguarding training and HWF aims to run training every year. As a minimum, regular volunteers (once a month) and those attending camps / residentials should undertake basic, in person Staying Safe training.
If not possible to attend in person, this Webinar provides a basic Intro and is only 20 mins long.

How do we keep children and young people safe at Woodcraft Folk? Clare Ritchie and Owen Sedgwick-Jell present an overview of Woodcraft Folk’s safeguarding processes aimed at new and existing volunteers. Topics covered include how to raise concerns with your Local Safeguarding Lead, as well as where to go for support and advice.
Completing the NYA introductory Course shows competence and provides a Certificate of Training. This short (30 mins) online module can be accessed free through the NYA’s Training Academy https://training.nya.org.uk/login/index.php
You'll need to create a login using the 'Youth Work One' option and go to the shop to select the training option.
It is recommended you complete this course.
